NFC Championship: San Francisco 49ers at Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons find themselves hosting the biggest home game in franchise history Sunday, the NFC Championship Game, against the newest darlings in the NFL the San Francisco 49ers. The weekend prior the Seattle Seahawks led in the NFL darling sweepstakes. After the Falcons victory (in another miraculous last second style win) all the media could talk about was the fact of how Russell Wilson got the Seahawks back in the game and gave them the lead after being down 20-0 and then 27-7 to start the 4th quarter. Not much talk about the heroics of Matt Ryan with another gutsy finish with only 31 seconds left on the clock to work with to lead the Falcons to another clutch win and this time in the PLAYOFFS. No one but the city of Atlanta and its fans wants the Falcons at the big party. Stay tuned…

The NFC Championship Game features quite a matchup: the high-powered offense of the Atlanta Falcons taking on a San Francisco 49ers defense that is regarded as one of the best in the NFL. While traditionalists still believe that defense wins championships, I contend that the Falcons‘ offense certainly is good enough to carry them to New Orleans for Super Bowl XLVII.

The Atlanta Falcons time has come to prove to the world who they are and the team that they are capable of being. Most of the season, even with a 9-0 start and positioned as the #1 seed in the NFC, still most experts doubt the Atlanta Falcons. Sunday’s NFC Divisional Playoff against the hot #5 seeded Seattle Seahawks will be the Falcons first test. The Falcons last playoff victory was in 2005 against the St. Louis Rams at home. The Falcons have concluded each of their last five seasons with a winning record. … Ryan has never lost back-to-back home games in college or the NFL. Because he lost at home in Week 17 of the regular season, a loss Sunday would mark the first time he’s lost two in a row on a friendly field. Wilson is trying to become just the fifth rookie quarterback in NFL history to advance to a conference championship. He’d be the first rookie to ever play in a Super Bowl, if he made it that far. Last week, Wilson became the third rookie QB in NFL history to win a playoff game after trailing at halftime. Sherman had eight interceptions (tied for second in NFL), three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery during the regular season — but he didn’t record any stats against the Redskins.

What was the proudest moment of your life?: One of the proudest moments of my life was when I cooked my first holiday meal without under/over/terribly cooking it. It was a turkey for Thanksgiving. No one got sick, and everyone went back for seconds. Win!

I’ve always wanted to see…: The seven wonders of the world.

Describe your style: I usually always wear something black. I don’t think I consciously intend to. I’ve just noticed that I have a ton of black in my wardrobe because this question forced me to look in my closet and observe “my style.”

What would you do if you won the Lottery?: I would take all of my friends and family with me on a world tour. Then, I would find where the band Gojira is playing and join them on stage for their entire concert.

What to watch in this weeks regular season finale:

If the Falcons score 40 points against Tampa this Sunday they will tie the 1998 Falcons for the franchise lead in points scored in a single season as well as average points per game. Currently the Falcons are at 402 points, averaging 26.8 per game. The ‘98 Falcons averaged 27.6 points, 442 points during the season.

The Falcons’ 26.8 points per game ranks them fifth in the NFL in points and in a season when scoring is up higher than it has been in many, many years, that’s quite a feat for the Falcons.

There’s nothing more for the Falcons to accomplish in this regular season. Home-field advantage is nice. Beating up some solid teams, like the Giants, on the way was nicer. So don’t be shocked if Atlanta rests some starters with nothing to gain. For the Bucs, losers of five straight at the end of a season that began with so much promise under coach Greg Schiano, a victory might be meaningful heading into the offseason.

Doesn’t it feel like the Falcons are the underdogs? That we take their win total for granted and offer little credit for the results they’ve compiled while knocking off one opponent after another. It does to me. But ask the players and get the answer: The only true barometer will be in the playoffs. That’s part of the vibe inside the locker room. The goal, instead of merely piling up wins, is to build toward the postseason. And stopping a physical, balanced offense like the Giants‘ unit would make the case that they are. And hitting the G-Men with a rejuvenated run game starring Jacquizz Rodgers (finally) would, too. As for the Giants, their record isn’t nearly as good, but they already seem playoff-ready. Drumming the Saints jumped Eli Manning out of his alleged funk. Taking down the Falcons in their house would take that further.

When you scoured the schedule at the beginning of the season, this one had so much promise. The Carolina Panthers were supposed to be better, the Atlanta Falcons were supposed to be what they are, and Cam Newton vs. Matt Ryan could have offered far-reaching implications. Now? Not so much. It might be a good game, though, with Newton always capable of making things interesting. When they last crossed paths, the Saints couldn’t lose and the Falcons couldn’t run. Now, everything has changed. New Orleans took a mistake-filled loss to the San Francisco 49ers, putting its playoff chances on life support. And the Falcons took a giant step toward finally being a well-rounded team, even if the ground production came in the form of little Jacquizz Rodgers. This rivalry certainly doesn’t lack venom, thanks to a number of recent incidents. Like the Saints hosting a posedown on the Falcons’ logo. Or Saints quarterback Drew Brees breaking the single-season yardage record late in a 29-point game last season. Or even new Saints star linebacker Curtis Lofton offering his old team no respect this week. This will be a great one to watch, because it’ll be high-scoring and fun. But what happens after the final whistle might be just as entertaining.

The Falcons lost CB Asante Samuel (right shoulder) in the first half, and WR Julio Jones (right ankle) hobbled off in the fourth quarter.
Falcons have won 9 in a row at home, a best since late 90’s.
Ryan became the first quarterback since Green Bay’s Bart Starr in 1967 to win a game despite throwing five interceptions with no touchdowns, according to STATS LLC.

If Raymond James Stadium doesn’t sell 7,400 non-premium seats (as of Tuesday), this game will be blacked out on television in the Tampa area. And with that news, I will shake my head. The hot-as-fire Bucs, winners of four straight, are taking on the best team in their division, the 9-1 Falcons. Tough to imagine a juicier matchup for Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman and his balanced offense. And it would be difficult to find a more intriguing clash of styles. You have the Bucs, who run and run and then stop the run. Contrast that with the high-flying Falcons, who run only when necessary, and you have a dichotomy. Can Tampa Bay cover the Falcons? Can the Bucs secondary force Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan into more interceptions after he coughed up five against the Arizona Cardinals in last week’s near-disaster? Here’s hoping the city gets to see the answers to these questions.

Why this game is intriguing: This is an upset-alert special. Why? Because the Falcons are coming off a stinging loss to the Saints that ruined their undefeated season. And they’re trying to recover from the insulting way New Orleans dispatched with them — turning them away three straight times after they got to the 1-yard line. At home against the reeling Cardinals, this is another chance for Atlanta to show it can hang physically. Easier said than done. The Cardinals offense is bad, mostly because of their quarterback play. But if their defense takes it to Atlanta, this has a chance to be interesting. The main challenge for any team facing Atlanta is disrupting Matt Ryan, keeping him from having the time to find receivers Julio Jones and Roddy White deep. Cardinals defensive end Calais Campbell and his front seven, coupled with impressive cornerback Patrick Peterson, have a chance to do just that on Sunday.

ked at it after Week 4. Now, this makes sense at No. 2. We know what the Falcons are. After dispatching the Dallas Cowboys, tight end Tony Gonzalez wondered if the time had come for media folks to finally say, “The Falcons are a good team.” Well, it’s here. They’re good. But more under-the-radar is the notion that the Saints could be on their way, also. Really; the belief has always been there. New Orleans followed an 0-4 start with a 3-1 run; roughing up the Philadelphia Eagles on national TV Monday just solidified Drew Brees‘ hope that all is not lost. The Falcons should be able to overwhelm that still-leaky Saints defense, even on the road, while their own corners present the Saints with the rare duo they can’t destroy with their passing attack. Atlanta is poised to pull this out. But if the Saints are the one team to tarnish the Falcons‘ record, they will have changed the conversation for 2012.

For an undefeated team, the Atlanta Falcons sure have a lot of doubters. Seven games, seven wins, and yet they’re rarely mentioned among the league’s elite. If this Sunday night spot against a Dallas Cowboys team that always draws a massive audience doesn’t convince ‘em, nothing will. (Of course, the Falcons must win.) For the Cowboys, a road win over an undefeated team would seem to prove that they are better than their record (currently 3-4). A lot at stake, and plenty of fun things to watch. The Falcons haven’t been perfect — except when it comes to their record — but they have been explosive. Julio Jones and Roddy White give Matt Ryan one of the league’s best receiving tandems, but they will be tested by Dallas. If the Cowboys‘ secondary (headlined by cornerbacks Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne) can lock down Atlanta’s talented wideouts, the Falcons might not be well-rounded enough to counter. They don’t run it well enough. But can Dallas accomplish this feat? Easier said than done. And can Falcons cornerback Asante Samuel, he of the 46 career interceptions, add to Tony Romo’s league-leading 13 picks?

Drama aside, this would still be a fun one. Matt Ryan’s pass-happy Falcons facing off against one of the most annoyingly aggressive front fours in football. Throw in Atlanta’s undefeated record and the immense potential in Philadelphia and this game has plenty of promise. And then you throw in all the other things going on with the Eagles. Honestly, this is quite winnable for Philly, given that it’s at home, the Eagles are coming off a bye, and they have a new defensive coordinator in Todd Bowles who will put his stamp on things. A victory could serve as a catalyst to jump-start this squad. But every loss could trigger more changes for Andy Reid’s team. Everything is filled with drama for Philadelphia.

Taking on the Run: Despite a 5-0 record, the best record in the NFC, there is a sense of urgency about improving the run defense.

Ryan talks up offense, Gonzalez: Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan talks with the media about facing an Oakland Raiders team coming off a bye week.

Mike Smith could join Dan Reeves with a victory: If the Falcons defeat the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, they’ll probably have to beg coach Mike Smith to take the game ball.

With the Oakland Raiders traveling across the country to face an offense that showed some uncharacteristic stumbles last week, expect the Atlanta Falcons to rebound in a big way. Oakland will get all the firepower Atlanta has to offer, and that figures to be too much. It’s setting up to be a blowout.

What to watch: The Raiders are definitely struggling, but they do have some talent on the defensive line. If the Falcons struggle to block Richard Seymour and Co., it changes things. But with the way Atlanta’s offense has fired downfield, the big plays could come in a hurry. It would take a monumental effort for Oakland to stop the Falcons from being 6-0.

Interesting Fact: Since the beginning of 2008 (1st year under Head Coach Mike Smith and Matt Ryan’s Rookie season), the Atlanta Falcons have won 48 out of 69 games. Only the New England Patriots have won more during that span.

In the standings, the meaning doesn’t jump out at you. It’s not a divisional game, and there isn’t a major underlying storyline. This one goes into the category of one that’ll just be fun to watch. The NFL’s most explosive aerial assault — featuring Matt Ryan, Julio Jones and Roddy White — will be wearing Falcons uniforms, but don’t sleep on what the Redskins bring. Rookie sensation Robert Griffin III keeps viewers glued to the screen, and he can do shootouts. Atlanta ranks third in the NFL with an average of 31 points per game, just ahead of Washington at fourth (30.8), making you think this will be a high-scoring affair.

What to watch: Still reeling from back-to-back brutal injuries to their defensive front (Brian Orakpo and Adam Carriker, both done for the season), the Redskins have just seven sacks on the season, not applying much pressure at all. If that continues, and if they don’t knock Ryan around, it’ll be a long day in the Redskins‘ secondary. Go to sleep for one play and Ryan pounces, as the Panthers painfully learned last Sunday. On the other side, Atlanta hasn’t found a way to successfully stop the run, and that’s something the Redskins certainly can exploit. The league’s best rushing unit not only features a breakout stud at running back (rookie sixth-rounder Alfred Morris), but also an explosive signal-caller in RG3. This should allow Washington to keep pace.

Notes: This is the Falcons 1st 3-0 start since 2004 (went 4-0) and ended up in the NFC Championship game. Before that 2004 start of 4-0, only in 1986 the Falcons went 4-0 (David Archer was QB - he is the radio color commentator now for the Atlanta Falcons Radio Network) and season ended with a record of 7-8-1. The only other season with a 3-0 start was in 1981 and ended with a 7-9 record.

Why this game is intriguing: Any chance to watch Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan continue torching the league should be seized upon. And the fact that the Panthers haven’t tackled in a few games has to make Ryan’s guys salivate. A real chance to go to 4-0 and take a (gulp) three-game lead in the division for Atlanta. It’s everything they hoped for after an offseason of offensive soul-searching.

What to watch: The Cam Newton honeymoon has ended in Carolina. The star quarterback is being scrutinized like never before, both for his play and his attitude. And that Superman-style touchdown celebration with his team down several scores against the Giants wasn’t a great move. Can he respond? Against the high-flying Falcons, scrutiny will continue.

Why this game is intriguing: Another rumble between undefeated teams, only one of which is a proven entity. It’s tough to doubt what the Falcons have done, especially after they hit the pause button on the Peyton Manning lovefest with some inspired ball-hawking in the Georgia Dome. It’s a little harder to figure out the Chargers. Victories over two winless teams haven’t offered solid proof that this year won’t be like the last two. And local enthusiasm seems to be lagging, particularly when it comes to selling tickets. But a win over Matt Ryan’s team could trigger a belief that the core is strong, even while San Diego deals with several key injuries.

What to watch:Ryan Mathews could return to action after missing the first two games of the season with a broken clavicle. The third-year running back’s talent is never in question, but Mathews needs to stay on the field, especially after an offseason full of anticipation and hype. If he manages to do that, the Chargers‘ offense could be as balanced as any. The Falcons‘ juggernaut of an offense, meanwhile, hit a bit of a roadblock against the Broncos, despite getting four turnovers from their defense. Can they rebound? And what should we expect from running back Michael Turner, who was arrested and charged with a DUI after Monday night’s big win?

What to watch: The Falcons suffered a brutal setback last week when corner-back Brent Grimes was placed on injured reserve. Definitely not what you want when your defense is trying to gear up to stop Peyton. Now, that trade for Asante Samuel is even bigger, as Atlanta suddenly has two No. 1 corners, instead of three. Manning could simply find the weak link and pick on him. The four-time MVP described himself as still having “limitations” — that’s kind of scary. We’ll see the next step in his progression.
